Districts of Bangladesh

Bangladesh is divided into 64 districts (জেলা, zila), the second-order administrative tier; the total stood at 64 as of 19 September 2026, and had not changed since at least 2024 ¹⁴. Districts are grouped within the eight administrative divisions, and each is headed by a Deputy Commissioner (জেলা প্রশাসক, Jelā Praśāsak), a central-government officer. The list below is taken from the National Portal of Bangladesh, grouped by division exactly as the government groups them, with the official Bangla names ¹.

English name spellings

English district names on the National Portal follow the government’s romanisations, some of which differ from older forms still widely used: Chattogram (formerly Chittagong), Cumilla (formerly Comilla), Jashore (formerly Jessore), Bogura (formerly Bogra), Barishal (formerly Barisal) and Jhalokathi (formerly Jhalokati) ¹⁴. The 2018 respellings of Chittagong division and Comilla district were name changes, not new administrative units ⁴.

District administration

The Deputy Commissioner heads the district administration and is appointed by the central government; district-level officers of the line ministries are likewise centrally appointed ². The elected body at district level is the Zila Parishad (জেলা পরিষদ), established under the Zila Parishad Act, 2000 ². Articles 59 and 60 of the Constitution require that local government in every administrative unit be entrusted to bodies composed of elected persons, and empower Parliament to confer powers on them by law ³.

The three hill districts

Bandarban, Khagrachhari and Rangamati — the three Chittagong Hill Tracts districts — have a distinct administrative arrangement. Their Hill District Parishads are administered by the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs rather than by the Local Government Division, under the 1997 Chittagong Hill Tracts Accord, and a Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council was established under the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council Act ². The territory of these districts is recognised in the Constitution’s definition of the Republic’s territory ².

• District populations are not tabulated here. Division-level 2022 census totals are available and are given in Administrative divisions of Bangladesh; district-level figures were not retrievable from a T1 page in this research round (BBS pages and the national census report PDF were not machine-readable), and no district figure is published above rather than a figure that was not obtained.
• The list above is taken from the official National Portal district page. Its parent grouping is the government’s own; some older compilations group districts differently where division boundaries have since changed ¹⁵.
